Gates Carbon Drive, maker of the leading belt drive system for bicycles and eBikes, has exciting plans for the 2014 North American Handmade Bicycle Show. They will be electrifying the event with a first-ever “Custom eBike Showcase,” which will feature a dozen original electric bicycles.
Gates has partnered with leading electric bike system companies Bosch, SRAM, and BionX, as well as hub maker NuVinci, to create these belt drive eBikes. They have enlisted some of America’s finest custom builders for the show, which will take place from March 14-16 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Gates Carbon Drive’s Goal
“Electric bikes can get more people out of cars and onto two wheels, and we want to expose more Americans to this efficient, affordable, and healthy transportation solution,” said Todd Sellden, global director of Gates Carbon Drive. The Custom eBike Showcase aims to allow top custom builders to present an American interpretation of the eBike movement that is sweeping Europe.
Award-Winning Builders
The showcase will include award-winning builders such as Co-Motion Cycles, English Cycles, Calfee Design, Kent Eriksen Cycles, Ti Cycles, Dean Cycle Works, SyCip Designs, Boo Bicycles, Santana, Alternative Needs Transportation, and Connor Wood Bicycles. Gates and its partners gave these builders creative freedom to design eBikes that suit their functional and artistic visions.
The belt drive eBikes cover a range of styles, including fat bikes and cargo bikes, tandems, urban commuters, and electric bikes made of bamboo and hardwood.
The eBikes will feature electric drives from Bosch, SRAM, and BionX, as well as NuVinci N360 continuously variable planetary hubs from Fallbrook Technologies.
The Custom eBike Showcase: Introduction of the Bosch Gen2 eBike System
The highly anticipated Bosch Gen2 eBike system is making its debut in North America at the Custom eBike Showcase. This event is crucial in bringing electric bikes, one of the fastest-growing segments in the bike industry, to more Americans. Global Growth of eBikes: A Continuing Trend
Sales of eBikes have consistently doubled every year in Europe and the United States. The chairman of the Light Electric Vehicle Association expects this upward trajectory to continue, with projected sales of two million eBikes in Europe for 2013.

The Custom eBike Showcase exemplifies Gates’ strong focus on the electric bike market, which is the largest growth category for Carbon Drive.
